Tautening skies
a new piano concerto
for Laura Farre Rozada

Tautening skies is a new piano concerto to be written by the up and coming composer Angela Elizabeth Slater for the brilliant pianist  Laura Farré Rozada.

Angela's work engages with mapping concepts from the natural world into her works and exploring representation of colour. Her practice often involves sketches in visual art and poetry before the compositional process itself. Recently Angela has become a 2020(/21) Tanglewood Composition Fellow and in 2019 won the prestigious Mendelssohn Scholarship.

Laura Farré Rozada is currently exploring approaches to memorisation in regard to post-tonal piano music through her doctoral research at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. She was recently a Birmingham Contemporary Music Group NEXT artist and has appeared as a soloist on a number of commercial CDs.

Tautening skies will receive two performances in December 2020, first at the Frontiers Festival at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire followed by a second performance at CBSO centre. This exciting project creates a space for Laura and Angela to collaborate closely, pushing each other’s artistic practices.  This project presents opportunities for both artists to build close working relationships with the next generation of professional musicians working in Birmingham.

The orchestra and chamber groups for the concerts will consist of current BCMG NEXT players, alumni NEXT players and RBC musicians. There will be an open workshop event held at RBC before the two main performances in December 2020/2021.

Angela Elizabeth Slater gratefully acknowledges support from PRS for Music Foundation.
