Connected skies: solo series challenge is a project to challenge myself to compose six new solo works of about ten mins each in length between October 2020 to May 2021, with each being digitally performed in a monthly virtual event from 2021.
New works for double bass, cello, flute with glissando head joint, accordion, percussion and mezzo soprano will be written. In addition to digital concerts, this project will include blogs, digital pre-concert talks and interactive Q&A sessions, giving us a chance to share our process in this continuing challenging and strange times.
This is the first live Q&A session following the digital pre-concert talk and concert of new piece for solo double bass 'The aching space between'.

‘I met double bassist Maggie Cox this summer at Tanglewood's virtual festival. As part of Tanglewood we worked on a piece together called 'A door to yesterday'. I immensely enjoyed working with Maggie on that piece - with the time, energy and insight she brings - so I was delighted to work with her again so soon on 'The aching space between', a new work for double bass.
We are delighted to share the result of our collaboration on Thursday 21 January 2021 at 7.30pm (UK time)’
Programme note:
The aching space between for solo double bass (2020)
The aching space between is a new solo work for double bass especially written for
Maggie Cox. It has been written as part of the Arts Council England funded projected
Connected skies: solo series challenge where composer Angela Elizabeth Slater has set out to write six new
works for double bass, cello, flute, accordion, percussion and mezzo soprano between October 2020-May 2021.
The aching space between explores the turmoil of emotions and pain associated with this
ongoing time of social distancing and not being able to connect with friends, family
and loved ones in the way we need to as humans. The frustration and desperation
caused by what feels like sometimes an endless place we find ourselves in.
